While many New Year resolutions focus on outward achievements or building new routines, spiritual fasting offers a more reflective approach to starting the year. Rather than relying solely on willpower, this practice encourages inner change by creating moments for self-discovery and a deeper connection with God. By stepping back from everyday distractions and intentionally abstaining from certain things, spiritual fasting can bring peace and inspiration that typical resolutions might miss. It fosters gratitude, mindfulness, and a calm, purposeful mindset, laying the groundwork for growth throughout the year.
Fasting holds an important place in Christian spirituality, rooted in biblical tradition. The Bible describes fasting as a way to seek closeness with God, ask for guidance, and show humility before Him. In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus instructs followers to fast privately and sincerely, highlighting that it is a personal act of devotion meant to draw one nearer to God.
A 21-day fast, often practiced by individuals or congregations at the beginning of the year, involves dedicated prayer and abstention from specific foods or activities to pursue spiritual clarity, breakthroughs, and a stronger relationship with God. Unlike typical New Year's goals aimed at external results, spiritual fasting centers on internal renewal and deepening one's faith. Biblical accounts, such as Daniel's fast for understanding (Daniel 10:2-3), inspire this practice—he refrained from eating meat, drinking wine, or enjoying rich foods to gain wisdom from God.
The objectives of fasting can include seeking guidance for life decisions, relationships, finances, and health (Matthew 6:33), growing closer to God (James 4:8), and refocusing by letting go of distractions (Psalm 46:10).
Popular forms of 21-day fasting are
-
the Daniel Fast—eating only fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and consuming water or juice (see Daniel 1:12, Daniel 10:2-3);
-
water or liquid fasts (Matthew 4:2); and partial fasts, which may involve giving up certain foods or activities like social media or fasting during specified times for dedicated spiritual reflection (Isaiah 58:6-7).
-
Selective or partial fast removing items like social media, or fasting during certain times of mourning for spiritual focus (Psalm 35:13-14).
